Hi everyone,
I hope you enjoyed a wonderful long weekend! May is almost over - it will be the last month of the school year before we know it! That being said, there is still a lot to be covered. I appreciate your support in continuing to help your children complete their homework on a regular basis for a few more weeks. It makes a huge difference in their overall learning and development!
We are continuing to focus on inferential thinking in Reader's Workshop. We will be doing our final ACRAR assessment this week.
We have also started our final genre of writing - Persuasive. It's lots of fun, and I think the kids are all really looking forward to it.
In Social Studies, we are finishing pamphlets on factors that influence people when choosing a place to live and we will begin looking at how the government is organized in Canada.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we approach the end of the school year!
Enjoy the beautiful sunshine!

May 8 - 12
I hope everyone had a great weekend!
Homework will be as usual this week. Everyone will have new word study words this week, and should be doing nightly activities with their words. These need to be recorded in their scribblers. Students should also be continuing to read 15 - 20 minutes every night and recording that in their reading logs.
We are working on a "Canada 150" project in social studies. We are reading/researching about reasons people choose to live in Canada (as well as particular parts of Canada). This year is Canada's 150th birthday! As a final project, students will be responsible for designing a pamphlet or poster convincing people why Canada is an amazing country to live in. We will work on this during class time, but there may be a bit to be done at home as well. I will provide basic materials, but if anyone has extra creative ideas and would like to bring in supplies from home, they are welcome to.
In Literacy we are working on inferring character traits and finding proof in the text. In writing our focus is on creating sentence fluency as writers. We will be moving into the persuasive genre of writing in the near future!
End of the year field trip:
We will be going to Shining Waters on June 16th for our end of the year field trip. If any parents/guardians would like to volunteer to chaperone, we would greatly appreciate it!
You must have a criminal record check that was done LESS than 2 years ago. Please contact the office if you need to check if your criminal record check is up to date. If you need a new one, please let me know and I will send the form home with your child.
Thank you for your continued support!

April 24 - 28
Hi everyone!
I just cannot believe we are into our last week of April. The time is flying by!
Everyone has completed their descriptive reports on their province/territory/capital and has shared them with 4B. I have printed them all off and will be sending them home with the students' final feedback this week. They are welcome to keep them!
This is another short week and therefore I have decided NOT to do new words for word study this week. There is a lot going on within the school this week with the Spring concert and Easter Seals, so there will be quite a bit of interrupted class time. I will be sending new words home with your child next week.
Important Dates/Events:
1. Spring Concert (Grades 4 - 6) - Wednesday, April 26 at 6 pm. Please ensure your child is at the school at 5:40. You can pick your child up from our classroom after the concert is over.
2. Easter Seals - We are collecting spare change to donate to Easter Seals. Any extra change you can send in is greatly appreciated!
3. Coupon Books Fundraiser - the order form for coupon books were sent home this past week. Any orders must be returned May 2 or 3 (order forms and money). Even if you do NOT sell any coupon books, please return the order forms.
4. Spring photos - Packages were sent home last week. If you would like to order any part of this package, please return the forms with your payment to the school. If you choose not to order any of the package, please return all materials to the school.
5. PD Day - Friday, April 28 - NO SCHOOL for students.
Have a fantastic week!

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful long weekend!
We are collecting spare change for Easter Seals. Anything you are able to donate is greatly appreciated!
The order sheet for the coupon book fundraiser has also gone home. Money raised goes to our school as well as the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation. Even you do NOT sell any books, please send the form back to the school with your child.
In our classroom:
We are fortunate to have someone from Junior Achievement come in this week and next to do presentations and workshops with our class. The focus is on technology in Canada, Canadian inventors and creative problem solving. This ties in well with our social studies curriculum.
We are also participating in the Great Canadian Mail Race. Students will be choosing a school somewhere else in Canada and will be writing letters to grade 4 students across the country!

Hi everyone!
I can't believe March Break is around the corner. Whether you are travelling or enjoying some down time at home, I hope you have a relaxing and rejuvenating break next week! I would also like to thank you all for taking the time to come for Parent/Teacher conferences! The home/school relationship and communication is crucial to your child's academic success! It was great to chat with you all!
In our classroom:
This week we will be working primarily on our descriptive reports. Realistically they will not be completely finished before the break, but I am hoping the rough drafts and editing and revising will be completed this week. We will also work on our own Coat of Arms for social studies and health. In reader's workshop we will continue to work on inferring skills.
Heritage Fair:
Information about the Heritage Fair will be coming home. The fair is optional for grade 4 students. If students choose to complete a project, it must have a Canadian theme such as history, geography, or heritage. The school Heritage Fair will take place on Thursday, April 6th. Please check out the following websites for helpful ideas.

Homework:
Since this is the week leading up to March Break, there will be NO regular homework for the week. We would expect that students are reading every night, as well as reviewing their multiplication facts.
Important Dates/Events:
Friday, March 17 - Saint Patrick's Day - students can choose to wear green, or they can wear their pajamas. A loonie or toonie would be appreciated. All money raised will go to Easter Seals.

Friday, March 17 - 4D Class Party!
We will be watching the movie "Holes" since we read the book as a class. The movie is rated PG, so you will need to fill out a permission form to allow your child to watch this movie. I have previewed it, and there are only a couple of spots that we will need to skip through.
If anyone would like to bring in some green treats in spirit of St. Patrick's day, they are more than welcome. We have discussed that there are many healthy choices available!
Ms. Young will be doing some fun activities in the afternoon as well!
I wish you all a wonderful week off!! I look forward to all the stories when we return to school Monday, March 27!

March 6 - 10
Hi everyone!
It's been a busy week in 4D! We are working diligently on our Canada reports. Students are developing their sub sections and working on adding in non fiction text features to their published copies on Google Slides. We are hoping to have them polished and ready to share before March Break.
In reading, we are focusing on the "Inferring" strategy. To make an inference is to use our own background knowledge (schema) and the clues the author gives us in the story to understand the meaning of the text. We will be reading "Varjak Paw" as a class, and students will have many opportunities to practice their inferencing skills throughout this novel, as well as in small groups and in their own reading.
As a link to our work in social studies and writing, we will be creating art based on famous Canadian artist, Ted Harrison. His work is based primarily on the northern landscapes in Canada which ties in with our work on regions and physical features. Keep your eye out for these pieces during Parent Teacher Conferences!
We have been lucky to have had several special events in the past week. Our trip to the Confederation Centre for Arts Discovery Days was a huge success. Students participated in 3 different workshops in visual arts, dance and drama. The students were excellent ambassadors of our school and we were all very proud of their enthusiasm and behaviour! We also had Libby Osgood, an engineering professor at UPEI, come to speak to the grade 4 classes about aerospace engineering! She shared many fascinating facts about space with us, including some of the work she has done with NASA. It has been fantastic to have these unique learning opportunities!

Hi everyone,
It is hard to believe we are well in to February! We are continuing our unit on descriptive report writing. Everyone has chosen a topic - a territory, province or capital city in Canada. We have constructed our criteria for the project and have started the research aspect of the project. Students are using a variety of sources, including our social studies text book to find facts relevant to their project. This is providing the opportunity to find important information in non fiction texts, as readers. As well, their sources are samples of what they can include as writers in their own reports. Students will have the choice on the form they will use to publish their final product. They may choose to do a hand written book or they may use Google Slides to create their report.
Our field trip for the Arts Discovery Days is officially postponed until February 23. We are very excited that they were able to offer us a make up date!
Homework:
There is a slight change in homework this week. Students will still be expected to record their reading (title, pages, etc), but rather than doing a reflection every night, they will be expected to fill out a Summary sheet instead. The summary sheet will be sent home on Monday and needs to be returned by Friday. We have been working on our Foundational Learning LC2 which is being able to retell a fiction text. Students can choose one of their fiction books to retell.
Important Dates/Info:
- Tuesday, February 14 - Red and White Day for Valentine's Day. Students are welcome to bring in Valentines or kind notes to put into their classmates' "mailboxes".
- Monday, February 20 - Islander Day - NO SCHOOL
- Wednesday, February 22 - Pink Shirt Day in support of Anti Bullying
- Thursday, February 23 - Grade 4 Field Trip to the Confederation Center

January 16 - 20
Sorry for the delayed post this week.
I wanted to touch base regarding homework. Although there are many who are doing an excellent job completing their homework each week, there also continue to be students who either aren't completing their homework or aren't handing it in. Reading logs are expected to be filled out for each night. Word study activities can be completed when you have the time, so if one particular night is really busy you can double up the next night. Going forth, any students who complete and hand in all their homework two weeks in a row will get a choice from the Treasure Chest. If homework continues to be incomplete, I will touch base on an individual basis.
We will be having a Social Studies quiz on Thursday. Students will be expected to match the province/territory with its capital and will need to be able to locate these on a map. Games and resources were sent home with students on Friday. The following website is a great way for them to practice where the provinces/territories and their capitals are located.
The sledding party is still postponed until we get some more snow. I will keep you posted :)

January 9 - 13
It will be a nice, busy week in 4D this week! I'm looking forward to a full week. Last week we spent some time revisiting expectations, and I know everyone is geared up for a productive week coming up.
Literacy:
We will be starting a unit on Synthesizing (summarizing and finding the main idea in both fiction and non fiction texts) in reading comprehension. This will be integrated with a Descriptive Report in writing. Our reports will be about a province or city in Canada as we learn more about the physical landscape of Canada in Social Studies. We will then present our report to a student in 4B, and vice versa.
Homework:
Due to the storm day last Wednesday, I did not collect reading logs on Friday. Homework expectations will resume this week. Please support your child in their nightly reading, and have them fill in their reading log each evening. There will be new word study words this week, so word study activities will be expected to be completed for homework as well. I have included the word study instructions/nightly schedule in your child's reading log duotang. This way, when they get new word study scribblers they will still have the instructions available at home.
Super Happy Fun Jar Celebration:
Our marble jar was filled before the holidays. There were already so many exciting and fun activities happening during that time, so we decided to hold off to have our celebration in the new year!
We will be having a sledding party! This will include sledding on school property and hot beverages afterwards. Students are welcome to bring their own sleds to school as long as parents can drop them off and pick them up. They are not able to go on the buses. I will also bring extra sleds. Helmets are encouraged - hockey helmets or bike helmets are acceptable. If anyone has extras that they are able to send, I would greatly appreciate it! Of course this activity is weather dependent. I am hoping we can do it on Thursday, as long as we don't get too much rain on Wednesday. A notice will go home with students today.
Have a great week!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you enjoyed a restful holiday and that everyone is feeling rejuvenated for the new year!
During this short week, we will be doing a New Year's Resolutions activity and discuss goals we have for the coming months. We will also be finishing up our narrative stories and be taking some time to share them with each other. This will be a great time to re-visit the expectations for Reader's Workshop. We will take some time to talk about choosing appropriate books, the importance of reading stamina, and reading responses.
As for homework, I have decided to invest in homework bags. The folders just weren't holding up and it was sometimes difficult to fit everything in. You will be seeing the green bags coming home. Any notices and communication from school to home will go home in the bags. Because it is a short week, we will wait to start Word Study until next week. Reading logs will need to be filled out this week. It is important that they are filled in each night. Thank you for your support with this!
I am really looking forward to seeing all the kids tomorrow!!
